Description
Rare WW1 D.C.M, M.M & Bar Trio Medal Group. One of 7 such combinations awarded to the A.I.F in WW1. D.C.M, Military Medal & bar & 1914/15 Star correctly named & impressed. British War Medal & Victory Medal unnamed replacements. 1738 William John Cooper was born at Grafton NSW. Enlisted at Lismore NSW 1914. Appears to have been evacuated to hospital ex Gallipoli 15/8/15. Cooper served with the 9th & 49th Battalions. Gallantry awards confirmed in London Gazette as follows:
- Military Medal L.G 14/8/17
- Bar to Military Medal L.G 1/2/18
- Distinguished Conduct Medal L.G 10/5/18
Citation for D.C.M as follows:
" For conspicious gallantry & devotion to duty while in charge of the regiment strecher bearers. When many of the strecher bearers had become casualties under heavy fire he organised squads & brought in and evacuated all wounded. By skilful attention to badly wounded cases he saved many lives and thanks to his example, the work was thoroughly & successfully carried out " .
